At Suroopu in Kiyokawa, Taito Ward, single-origin sencha and stem hojicha from Shiga and Shizuoka are brewed slowly in teapots. From choosing your own cup to sipping craft beer and selected local sake, it is a comfortable stop for a pause.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step off the backstreets of Kiyokawa in Taito Ward and into Suroopu, and the first thing that catches your eye is the breadth of teas on offer. The menu features cultivar-driven leaves that celebrate distinctive flavor profiles, such as Asamiya sencha "Koshun" from Shiga, known for its herbal freshness and gentle sweetness, and "Yamakai," with its wine-like aroma and crisp finish. From the Tenryu sencha selections of Shizuoka, options include "Inzatsu 131," a cultivar crossed with Assam varieties that yields a singular fragrance; "Shizu-4006," combining fruitiness with pleasant astringency; and "Oshiroki Kurasawa," redolent of fresh grasses and flowers. Sampling and comparing them to match your mood is part of the pleasure. Hon.yama stem hojicha from Shizuoka, with its toasty warmth and mellow sweetness, can be enjoyed hot from a teapot or steeped cold as a subtle, delicate cold brew.
When you order tea, you are invited to pick your favorite cup from the diverse selection lining the shelves. Sitting at the 1F counter while your tea is carefully brewed from leaves is an easy way to unwind after walking around the neighborhood. Non-alcoholic alternatives include sweet amazake served hot or cold, as well as juices made from Yamanashi white peach and Sun Tsugaru apples, fitting smoothly into a quiet afternoon.
Beyond daytime cafe drinks, the thoughtfully curated alcohol list is just as compelling. Osaka's Minoh Beer is well represented with pilsner, weizen, pale ale, and stout on hand for craft beer enthusiasts. The sake lineup introduces distinctive regional labels, including Kurozasa Classic Tokubetsu Junmai and Shirasasa Tsuzumi from Kanagawa, alongside Shojo from Nara. You may even find unusual regional pours like Cook Eureka Lemon Nigori Sake, crafted locally in Taito Ward.
The 2F space hosts workshops and community events, giving the entire venue a welcoming, handcrafted warmth. Whether you settle in over a thoughtfully brewed pot of tea or switch gears with a glass of sake or craft beer, it is an easygoing place to pause at your own pace.
